Portela Soni Medical LLC (PSM) was founded in order to bring innovation to a stagnant urinary catheter market and provide the next generation of simple, high-value medical devices. PSM is a team of engineers, physicians, scientists, medical device executives and nurses. The company is currently in the research and development phase of an indwelling urinary catheter.
PSM’s first venture is to reduce hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are a $45 billion burden to the United States healthcare system. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) make up more than 40% of HAIs.
Rhode Island, like most states, are challenged with the healthcare burden of constantly improving quality and patient safety.
